A while ago I got 2 keys cut and got a hide a key. I put my original Key that was worn down to almost nothing, thinking I'd only use it in emergencies in the hide a key. I just went to check my hide a key, and it was wide open. Now my original key is somewhere on the road. Now I gotta go get another key cut and get another (better quality) hide a key.

I need to get one as well. As a matter of fact I'm currently pushing my luck using just one key all this time. Thanks for this unintended reminder.

You're welcome, I guess. I still have the 2 new keys (one as a daily and one as a spare set that I keep at home). So I can still drive, but I need a hidden one on the truck so I don't have to call my parents to rescue me if I lock my keys in my truck. Btw, the original key that is now lost on the road looked like this:
It should look like this:
While it technically still worked, it was really worn. I guarantee if someone finds it they will think someone littered it instead of throwing it out.
Side note: the guy that cut the new key was a magic man, he restored bits of metal that hasn't existed for at least a decade.

Hmmm that is nice. I also need a spare to leave in the house. You know how we all have those mornings we can't seem to find anything. Always have to have that back up.

Yep that old key looks like it could double as a sword for Final Fantasy or something. My old Escort GT the ignition cylinder wore out. Didn't even need a key to turn it on. Just push the clutch and turn the spot where a key is supposed to go and you're off. Also couldn't really get locked out because with a good enough tug I could pop open the hatch and just crawl through the back. Ahhh good times indeed.

Ya, I'm not too worried about it. Funny thing, when I started the truck for the first time with the new key it was a fight to get it all the way in. I don't think the tumblers have gone all the way up in a very long time Before that. Now I have no issue.

good thing you checked now , instead of finding out right when you need it.
will a 5c coin open or start your ute?
if so , just keep a 5c coin in your pocket at all times.

Haha, no a nickel won't start it. And I've never really thought about it, I guess if is a ute. I've never thought of it as anything but a truck, I like ute better

what i don't understand is why your vehicle is referred to as a "truck" ?
it's just a large ute.
to me a truck is anything from an Isuzu N-series /Hino/UD and larger , diesel only mostly , used for commercial purposes.

To me it's too small to be a truck. I've always considered it more of a large car with extra storage space than a small truck. What you are referring to in America is a truck, but there is kinda a non verbal understanding that it is different than a pickup. But even my ranger is too small to be a pickup truck in my mind. I pulled up next to a Ford Explorer in my truck the other day, that mom mobile dwarfed my truck. I think I'll start calling it a ute. It seems to be a more apt term.

Never had a problem with the sliding hide a key box, don't think I'd trust a hinged one, obviously I shouldn't.

Well if you had bought a Honda Civic, you could have used practically anything as a key. So none of this would have even happened because you could have unlocked the door with a paper clip.

Ok this might suck, but it has worked out for me. Zip tie your key to something underneath. I put it on my front swaybar, the metro is pretty low, so you ranger should be a bit easier to access.
